REMOS G-3 RAISES THE BAR FOR LIGHT SPORT AIRCRAFT
Eschelbach, Bavaria – Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) manufacturers are quick to point out unique features in their designs and claim technological advancements. Occasionally, some of them do bring something new to the table, but true innovation is still a pretty rare commodity in LSA designs. The German REMOS G-3 LSA changes all that.
In combining known technology and design parameters with the desire to substantially enhance the quantity and quality of pilot-friendly benefits, REMOS aircraft started with a blank page, transformed original thinking into a modernized production line for the G-3 and upgraded LSA flight to a higher level in the process.
The basics sound familiar: side by side seating for two, high wing, tricycle landing gear, folding wings, carbon fiber and composite construction. The improvement lies in the inspired ways these elements are combined. Capitalizing on a cockpit width of 46.8 (an increase of more than five inches over the Beech 58 Baron), German engineers developed a wrap-around windshield and blister side windows that offer unexcelled visibility for an LSA. Cockpit size and insulation along with a useful load of 704 lbs, permit big and tall pilots to sit comfortably in well-padded seats allowing for extended cross-country flying without the normal levels of fatigue. A stainless steel exhaust and after-muffler, engineered to exceed rigid European noise standards allows a pilot to fly all day and arrive feeling refreshed.
The folding wings reduce the size of the REMOS to the most compact LSA package in existence, allowing for home storage or tucking into the corners of most existing hangars already housing a resident aircraft.
Style played a major role in the REMOS design, giving the G-3 a modernist and aerodynamically efficient shape that turns heads wherever it lands. The box look typical of aluminum designs has given way to fluid compound curves that provide the REMOS a go-fast appearance, even while sitting on the ramp. Elevator and rudder location assure quick response to any changes in power settings. Entry and egress are easy through large cockpit doors that seal tightly when closed.
Instrument panels can be configured for basic VFR up through advanced IFR systems. Power for the G-3 is provided by a certified Rotax 912S, 100 hp, four-cylinder, four stroke engine. High performance hydraulic disc brakes are a departure from the typical cluster braking mechanisms found in most LSAs, assuring positive ground handling.
At gross, 1320 lbs, the G-3 will take off in 330 ft, climb at 1100 fpm, cruise at 120 mph, and stall at 45 clean or 38 with full flaps. It has a glide ratio of 1:17 and a range over 500 miles with an economical 5 gph fuel burn.
Control harmony, response and pressures provide for positive handling on final through flare, taking the anxiety out of landings. The clean, rugged gear is designed to withstand the rigors of flight training schools and the REMOS does make an excellent platform for instruction.
The G-3 has met with an enthusiastic response in Europe and initial reaction in the United States has yielded enough orders to fill the 2006 production run.
